Zohran Mamdani becomes the new mayor of New York City, openly challenges Trump, “Turn up your voice!”
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist leader of Indian origin, won a historic victory. Following his victory, Trump delivered a powerful message in favor of immigrants, saying, “So it begins!”

New York. Indian-American Zohran Mamdani made history by winning the election as the new mayor of New York City. Addressing thousands of supporters at a Brooklyn theater after his victory, he directly challenged US President Donald Trump.
Mamdani said, “If your immigration policy is to reach us, you’ll have to go through all of us first. A city run by immigrants will always welcome immigrants.”
Addressing Trump, he sharply said, “Donald Trump, I know you’re watching, so turn up your volume.”
Trump’s counterattack
Following Mamdani’s remarks, Trump responded on his social media platform, Truth Social, writing, “…AND SO IT BEGINS! (So it begins!)”
He called Mamdani a “communist” and warned that if Mamdani’s policies were implemented, New York would suffer “economic and social devastation.” Trump even threatened to withhold federal funding from the city.
The Beginning of a “Bold New Path”
Mamdani described his historic victory as “the beginning of a bold new path.” He promised that his government would introduce initiatives such as free and fast bus service, universal childcare, rent control, and improved public housing.
He said, “Now every New Yorker will feel the impact of this change.”
Quoting former Governor Mario Cuomo, Mamdani said, “You campaign in poetry, but govern in prose. If that’s the case, our prose will rhyme too, and we’ll build a brighter city.”
Shared pride with parents
At this historic moment, Mamdani was joined on stage by his mother—renowned film director Mira Nair—and father—Ugandan-Indian professor Mahmood Mamdani.
The 34-year-old Mamdani said, “I am young, I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist, and I make no apologies for any of this.”
Message on the Jewish community and inclusivity
Responding to accusations of anti-Semitism surrounding anti-Israel protests, he said,
“We will build a City Hall that stands with the Jewish community and fights against anti-Semitism.”
He added, “Where over one million Muslims feel they are not only citizens of this city, but also have a place at the center of power.”
Rivals’ Reaction
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, whom Mamdani defeated, said, “I want him to succeed, because if he succeeds, so will New York.”
Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, while wishing him well, warned, “If Mamdani implements socialism or weakens the police, I will be his biggest opponent.”
