Navi Mumbai: A robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction performed on a 53-year-old breast cancer patient at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, has pioneered a new direction in cancer treatment. The surgery was not only successful, but the patient returned home the very next day—without any major complications. Dr. Neeta Nair, Lead Consultant, Breast Robotic Surgery, explained that the technique aims to completely remove the cancer while preserving the natural appearance of the breast. Removing the tumor through smaller incisions results in significantly lighter scars, faster recovery, and improved patient confidence. Compared to traditional open surgery, robotic mastectomy results in less tissue and blood loss and significantly less pain. Furthermore, immediate reconstruction reduces the psychological trauma of losing a breast. This procedure is especially beneficial for early stage cancer patients where the tumor is away from the nipple and the skin is unaffected.
