India to Emerge as a Global Maritime Power: Announces Sarbananda Sonowal

Mumbai: Ahead of India Maritime Week 2025, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal outlined a historic vision for India’s blue economy during a press conference in Mumbai. He announced an ambitious roadmap targeting an investment of ₹80 lakh crore and the creation of 1.5 crore maritime jobs by 2047. In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, India is moving rapidly towards green shipping, carbon-neutral ports, and technological innovation.

 

Sonowal stated that India Maritime Week 2025 will serve as a global platform for maritime partnerships, investment, and innovation, bringing together representatives from over 100 countries and more than 500 exhibitors. Highlighting India’s progress, he added that since 2014, cargo movement through inland waterways has increased eightfold, while the turnaround time at major ports has reduced by 60%, marking a transformative leap in India’s maritime sector.
