India ranks 92 in education among 145 countries.The Indian education system is quite an old education system with more than 1.5 million schools, 8.5 million teachers and 250 million students.

The Britishers introduced missionaries schools in India which was very effective. India has produced so many genius mind like Swami Vivekanand, Shubhash Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, Rakesh Sharma, Kalpana Chawla and many more who have made India proud all over the world.

The history of the Indian Education System is synonymous with the Gurukul System. There was Guru and Shishyas in ancient times. The students were taught the entire subject from Sanskrit to Holy Scriptures and Mathematics to Metaphysics by Gurus. This ancient system of education in India continued for years until the modern education system came into the picture in the 19th Century.

In India it is assumed by the society that students with 90% can only achieve success in life. The one below this margin are always mocked upon.This societal pressure provokes them and end up making a wrong decision in their life. The Indian Education System lacks behind due to some of the reasons such as lack of funds, expensive higher education, neglect of Indian languages, problem of brain drain, wastage of resources and many more. 90% of the education is theoretical with minuscule scope for practical learning and research on the part of the pupils. Students are bound to a specific syllabus and are not really encouraged to go out and about their seems which leads to dissatisfaction in students, parents and teachers.

So now the question is how Indian Education System can be improved?

Mahatma Gandhi said ” The future of India lies in its villages. If the villages perish , India will perish too”. This alone explains the significance of focus on rural education. We should have schemes and schools that provide good education to children living in villages.

During the East India company Indians were exploited due to its illiteracy and now Indians are exploited by Indians itself. The schools must be encouraged to introduce conceptual learning which avoids students to mug up what they are being taught.
