Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, requesting a two-day discussion in both Houses of Parliament on the historic occasion of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India.
Rahul Gandhi said in the letter, “I am writing this letter to you on behalf of all opposition parties, requesting a two-day discussion in both Houses of Parliament on the historic occasion of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly. This will carry forward the special function organized in the Central Hall today. This historic occasion provides an invaluable opportunity for all MPs to collectively reflect on the legacy of Dr. BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution.”
Rahul Gandhi said in the letter that there have been many examples of such special discussions in the past. In 2015, both the Houses had a two-day, 13-hour discussion to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar on November 26. We also discussed in both the Houses to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement on 9 August 2017 and the 75th anniversary of the country’s independence in 2022.The Congress said in the letter that I am confident that you (Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla) will agree to our request. I am confident that such a dialogue will strengthen the spirit of democracy and demonstrate Parliament’s commitment to the ideals of justice, freedom, equality and fraternity envisaged by the Constitution. The government’s legislative agenda can be considered after the two-day discussion.Let us tell you that during the winter session of Parliament, there will be a debate on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution in the Lok Sabha on December 13 and 14.
