Amid nationwide student protests, Human Rights Ambassador Sheena Chohan: “Know your rights. Stand up for them

Mumbai:Sheena Chohan, who was awarded the Human Rights Hero Award at the United Nations, has called for mandatory and complete human rights education in all Indian schools, so students are completely aware of their right to protest, right to freedom of expression, and right to no torture.

Sheena says: “The Right to Education only exists because so many Indian freedom fighters fought for and used The Right to Expression, Freedom of Thought and The Right to Protest to gain it for all citizens. So by protesting, the students of our country are carrying out their constitutional right to protest, to ensure their other constitutional right, to an education. What I have called for, for the last decade, is that students are given a full and complete education in all of their human rights, both the Constitution of India and the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, so they are fully empowered both nationally and internationally, to stand up for their rights and understand their duties .If we don’t know our rights, how do we stand up for them”

Amid nationwide protests, Sheena Chohan posted the right to protest on social media channels and said, “Know your rights. Stand up for them. Stand up, Speak up. Every Voice Matters“

Sheena was given the Presidential Volunteer Award by US President Joe Biden and is the only Indian artist followed by the United Nations Human Rights office on social media. She spread awareness of basic rights and equality to 120 million people and placed free human rights education into the curriculums of over 130 schools and universities.

At this time of heightened interest in the right to education, Sheeena Chohan points out that the current education in human rights and the Constitution is lacking. She says: “The government’s New Education policy is excellent – it correctly calls for an end to memorisation and instead for education to result in understanding which gives practical skills and ability. That is precisely the type of human rights knowledge that is needed – not to just be able to recite some rights, but to know how they apply to your life and the lives of others, and most importantly – how to use those rights. A practical education in The Constitution and United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights gives students the full power and ability that citizens need to achieve the goals of a fair and just society. It is the vital need of the hour.”
